Norway

About Norway

Mostly known for the beautiful landscapes, the uncountable hikes and the cold, Norway can also have a beautiful and hot summer especially in the south. Moreover, the way of life is way more different, so be ready to start running. Although, the coffee culture and adventure are solely Norwegian. Working during the week, doing sport after work to finish at the bar during the weekend can be a good description of what you will see.

However, we are still students so let’s talk about money/ prices :

Despite popular belief, Norway is one of the cheapest countries in Scandinavia thanks to its advantageous exchange rate. The country has its own currency, the Norwegian krone (NOK), which currently varies between 11.40 nok and 11.50 nok for €1.
If you are looking for an apartment we would recommend you to go on the SIO facilities or contact your university to know if they have facilities, renting a place is really expensive.
Common transport (bu, metro) are all from the same company : Ruter, which will cost you around 50€ monthly.
The price of the groceries can vary a lot from the north to the south. We would recommend you to go at the REMA1000 or Kiwi to do it especially in Oslo

Another point concerns alcohol selling, be ready to not drink that much. Alcohol is highly regulated, all bottles with more than 5 degrees are sold in the Vinmonopolet shops at a higher price (around 20% more). Those shops are open from 9am to 6pm during the week, 10am to 4pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Traveling in Norway

Traveling around Norway can be cheap if you travel by plane with the national company, Norwegian airline, and the code UNDER26 to get some discount. But we could suggest traveling by car (especially at Lofoten and in the North) to see how amazing the country could be.

Here is a list of places to visit:

  • Bergen : 2nd city of the country, the train to go there could be the most beautiful that you will see
  • Lofoten : Hikes, nature, rent a car at Bodo then go to see the most beautiful football stadium in the world. But don’t go there after the end of september.
  • Tromsø : Not the northern city, but it’s cold enough to see northern lights easily. And you can see whales and dolphins.
  • Stavanger : One of the most beautiful hikes at the end.
